An Adult or Permanent Tooth is Knocked Out - It is important to keep the tooth moist, so it can be reinserted. When this is not possible, put the tooth between your cheek and gums or in a glass of milk, until you can get to the dentist. A Cracked Tooth - When a tooth cracks, you should use warm water to rinse your mouth and use a cold compress on your face to prevent swelling.
Biting Your Lip or Tongue - This type of injury should be gently cleansed with water and use a cold compress to prevent swelling.
Tooth Pain – A toothache can cause a surprising level of pain. Use warm water to rinse the mouth and floss the tooth to remove any food that may be caught. Avoid the old time home remedy of placing an aspirin on the tooth. If an object is stuck and doesn’t come loose with floss, leave it alone and do not try to use sharp objects to remove it.

Steinway Family Dental Center Advice for patient experiencing a dental emergency
What to do if you are having a dental emergency.
Swelling in your jaw or an abscess
If a patient is experiencing sore gums or swelling then it is important that you see the dentist immediately. Swollen gums or swelling of the jaw can be a sign of a dental abcess or infection in the jaw. However the only way that we can identify the reason for the swelling is to have a thorough examination by your dentist.
If by chance the abscess in your mouth ruptures you will experience a sudden foul-smelling and foul tasting fluid from the affected area - then wash your mouth out with warm water immediately.
What to do if a patient has a chipped or a broken tooth?
If you have lost the piece of chipped tooth then then dentist can make material that he can use to bond to your teeth that will match the color of your teeth so that nobody will even know that you have chipped in the first place.
